Oh, Glossier. Breaking up with you after my fungal acne diagnosis was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do! I’m a bit more than just a fan of Glossier. Each time I’ve visited New York City, I’ve gone out of my way & queued in a long line to shop inside the flagship store in Soho.

I decorated all my electronics with free Glossier stickers and spread the word about their company to all my friends. You may be surprised by this – Glossier has become a bit controversial in an age where everything is political.

But that doesn’t change the fact that their branding is genius, their packaging beautiful, and their approach to makeup changed the beauty world!

But after I found out a nasty yeast called malassezia furfur was causing my skin to breakout (and stay broken out), my relationship with Glossier’s makeup & skincare products came to a crashing halt.

Our beautiful, tragic love affair came to an end.

Why I Broke Up with Glossier Products

So why did I quit using Glossier products after I found out I had fungal acne?

First of all – if you haven’t ever heard about fungal acne, I want to point you to some resources I’ve created. In fact, this blog & my Youtube Channel are littered with free resources + content surrounding this skin condition scientifically known as malassezia folliculitis or pityrosporum folliculitis.

But back to the question as to why I quit using Glossier products! Here’s the answer ?

? Most of Glossier‘s products are formulated with ingredients that feed the malassezia yeast, and therefore – promote the growth of fungal acne.

But notice I said MOST of their products are formulated poorly for fungal acne – not ALL!

The good news is, I’ve found 7 products in Glossier’s makeup & skincare line that are safe for fungal acne. And without further ado, here they are!

Glossier Makeup for Fungal Acne

1. Niteshine Highlighter Concentrate*

For once, I’m giving you the product I’m most excited about first instead of saving the best for last.

This high-wattage highlighter comes in 4 colors and gets rave reviews!

Now I’ll be honest – while my skin is clear, I still have pitted scarring from my days of severe cystic acne, so I usually avoid highlighters. Don’t wanna bring any extra attention to those scars by highlighting them, ya know?

Psst! Need a fungal acne safe makeup routine for glossy skin? Watch this!

*The primary ingredient is Isododecane, which is derived from petroleum, so a test patch is recommended

2. Pro Tip Brush Point Liquid Eyeliner

Oh look, it’s another felt tip liquid eyeliner!

Now I don’t mean to sound too cynical, but if there’s one thing I’ve discovered in my research of fungal acne safe makeup – it’s that most liquid eyeliners are safe to use.

That’s technically good news, but when you can already get one from any makeup brand/line – do we really need this expensive option from Glossier?

I think not.

In fact – I’m admitting it! Even though I’m a Glossier fan, I have to be honest – their prices are high. And in the case of this liquid eyeliner – we’re just paying for branding, not a stellar product.

3. Brow Flick Microfine Detailing Pen*

Now the brow flick excites me much more than the liquid eyeliner!

I recently *accidentally* shaved off a big chunk of one of my eyebrows. You’ve never seen a girl hustle her booty to Ulta so fast. Only – when I arrived there – I didn’t know what I could use that was fungal acne safe!

Petition to carry Glossier at Ulta?

The caveat of this product is that only the blond and brown shades are safe, because the black shade contains castor oil. And castor oil is a BIG NO NO when it comes to malassezia yeast.

*In blond and brown ONLY, not in black which contains castor oil

4. Wowder Weightless Finishing Powder

The Wowder is a product that I have personally used in the past. And I’ll admit to you – I’ve never been thrilled by it.

Fungal acne safe finishing powders are almost as plentiful as liquid eyeliners, so I think there are better, more affordable options than this one.

However – I will hand it to Glossier in the sense that when I previously used this product – I had yet to discover fungal acne, and I was still prone to constant breakouts.

I might feel much differently with my new skincare + makeup routines.

So tell me – have you used this, and what do you think? I’m wondering if I should try it out again. ?

Glossier Skincare for Fungal Acne

5. Super Pure Niacinamide + Zinc Serum

I’m a huge fan of niacinamide & zinc for treating acne-prone, congested skin. I talk more about this topic in my video on The Ordinary products safe for fungal acne.

And speaking of The Ordinary, their version of this product is less than half the price of Glossier’s and formulated just as well!

So again – you’re paying for branding when it comes to this product, not necessarily quality.

6. Soothing Face Mist Rosewater Spray*

Face mists are a bit overrated, but they certainly do make you feel luxurious.

Part of my daily moisturizing routine is spritzing my face with a fine mist of water before applying hyaluronic acid and moisturizer. But I just use tap water in this spray bottle I bought off Amazon.

This technique really helps to lock in moisture, so if you buy this – I’d recommend layering this product with moisturizer in the same way.

*Contains 2 amino acids, which can cause growth of malassezia in the presence of lipids

Glossier Fragrance for Fungal Acne

7. Glossier You Eau de Parfum*

Ok my people, here is the final product from Glossier that is safe for fungal acne. If you haven’t had the pleasure of smelling this perfume IRL, then allow me to describe it: roses.

And here’s me taking my opportunity to be divisive….

With all due respect to old ladies, roses just smell like old lady perfume to me. I just… can’t. I hate it.

And I recognize I should probably find a way to articulate my dislike of certain scents other than saying “it smells like old lady perfume”. What does that even mean, really? I guess if you know, you know.

However, if you like to smell like an English rose garden – more power to you! You’ll probably really enjoy this perfume.

*Contains Alcohol, Fragrance, and Farnesol, common perfume ingredients which can be irritating for some
